Tax Forms for Windows
The same product with a different trust boundary. Your answers, your documents and the audit trail live in one file on your machine, in a folder you chose — your data stays where you put it.
Version 0.3.0 · 55.1 MB · Windows 10 22H2 or later, 64-bit
Check what you downloaded
The installer is not code-signed yet, so this hash is the only way to be sure the file you have is the file we built.
In PowerShell:
Get-FileHash .\TaxForms-0.3.0-setup.exe -Algorithm SHA256It should print:
70db27e81adc8da2e1cfc44ea568d74069b6280fb3c4c021b6ae92f1c548261fWindows will warn you the first time
Because the installer is unsigned, Windows shows "Windows protected your PC — Unknown publisher", and its default button is Don't run. That warning is about the absence of a certificate, not about anything found in the file.
To continue: click More info, then Run anyway. If you would rather not, check the hash above first — that is exactly what it is for.
What needs the internet, and what does not
Everything the app works out for itself runs with no network at all. Only reading a document needs one.
Works with no network
- Fill a form you have already added
- Questions, arithmetic, receipts and the audit trail
- Export the filled PDF
- Delete a form, or the whole file
Needs the internet
- Adding a form from irs.gov
- Reading an uploaded W-2 or 1099
- Checking whether IRS has published a newer revision
It does not update itself
The app checks whether a newer version exists and, if there is one, opens this page. It downloads nothing and runs nothing on its own — an updater is a channel for fetching code and executing it on a machine holding your tax records, and we would rather not build one.
Uninstalling keeps your files
The uninstaller removes the program and nothing else. Your .taxforms files stay exactly where they are, and reinstalling finds them again. Data goes when you delete a file, in the app or in Explorer, deliberately and one at a time.
